Joanna Barnes

Ceramic Artist & Teacher

Joanna graduated in 1990 as a mature student with a Degree in Three Dimensional Design Glass and Ceramics. In the following years she taught in a variety of settings, belonged to an Art Organization, exhibited her work and was commissioned to do various installations. In 1996 she returned to Portugal, her second home to be with now elderly parents.

Family and work commitments over the next few years eventually led to her having to give up her studio. Now “retired” the opportunity to immerse herself in her passion has arisen.

As an Ecologist, her inspiration is found in nature and natural forms upon which her work is based. The simplicity of a curve reflecting light and the colours of the Algarve can be found in each piece. The knowledge that pottery shards are unearthed every day, made by our Neolithic ancestors who used the alchemy of earth and fire to mould simple mud into a fragment that stands the test of time is at once, humbling and exhilarating.

All pieces are hand-built and unique using the technique of slab-building. They are fired to Stoneware temperature and are not meant for any use other than to please the eye and embellish your home.

Joanna also teaches and strives to share her passion with her students, some of whom have set up their own studios her in the Algarve.

Joanna formou-se em 1990, como aluna adulta, com uma licenciatura em Design Tridimensional em Vidro e Cerâmica. Nos anos seguintes, lecionou em diversos ambientes, integrou uma organização artística, expôs o seu trabalho e foi contratada para realizar diversas instalações. Em 1996, regressou a Portugal, a sua segunda casa, para estar com os seus pais, agora idosos.
Os compromissos familiares e profissionais dos anos seguintes levaram-na a abandonar o seu atelier. Agora "aposentada", surgiu a oportunidade de se dedicar à sua paixão.

Como Ecologista, a sua inspiração encontra-se na natureza e nas formas naturais nas quais se baseia o seu trabalho. A simplicidade de uma curva que reflete a luz e as cores do Algarve pode ser encontrada em cada peça. Saber que cacos de cerâmica são desenterrados todos os dias, feitos pelos nossos antepassados neolíticos, que usaram a alquimia da terra e do fogo para moldar lama simples num fragmento que resiste ao teste do tempo, é ao mesmo tempo humilhante e estimulante.

Todas as peças são feitas à mão e únicas, utilizando a técnica de construção em laje. São queimadas à temperatura de grés e não se destinam a nenhum outro uso além de agradar aos olhos e embelezar a sua casa.

Joanna também ensina e se esforça para compartilhar sua paixão com seus alunos, alguns dos quais montaram seus próprios estúdios no Algarve.
